General about IEC:

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is an international standards organization that prepares  and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies – collectively known as “electrotechnology”. IEC standards cover a vast range of technologies from power generation, transmission, and distribution to home appliances and office equipment, semiconductors, fiber optics, batteries, solar energy, nanotechnology, and marine energy as well as many others. The IEC also manages four] global conformity assessment systems that certify whether equipment, system, or components conform to its international standards.

Switchgear IEC standards:

IEC Standards play a very important role in familiarizing and testing different switchgears.

Standards are an important source for understanding, testing, and educating a variety of switchgear.

About IEC 62271-200:

This standard is part 200 from IEC 62271 that published about switchgears.

This part of IEC 62271 specifies requirements for prefabricated metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear for alternating current of rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV for indoor and outdoor installation, and for service frequencies up to and including 60 Hz. Enclosures may include fixed and removable components and may be filled with fluid (liquid or gas) to provide insulation.
Note: Although primarily dedicated to three-phase systems, this standard can also be applied to single-phase or two-phase systems.

International Standard IEC 62271-200 has been prepared by a technical subcommittee 17C(High voltage switchgear and controlgear).

The main parts of IEC 62271-200 standard are:

1-Medium voltage Metal-enclosed switchgear rating.

2-Medium voltage Metal-enclosed switchgear design and construction.

3-Medium voltage Metal-enclosed switchgear type tests.

4-Medium voltage Metal-enclosed switchgear routine tests

5-Guide to the selection of switchgear and controlgear

6-Information to be given with inquiries, tenders, and orders for Medium voltage Metal-enclosed switchgear (informative).

7-Transport, storage, installation, operation, and maintenance

9-Influence of the product on the environment

In most of the above parts, we can see reference has been made to the standard IEC 62271-1(common switchgear standard)

Also, this standard has 3 annexes about medium-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear topics:

  • Annex AA (normative) Internal arc fault – Method to verify the internal arc classification (IAC).
  • Annex BB (normative) Partial discharge measurement.
  • Annex CC (informative) Regional deviations.

IEC 622271-200 standard update process:

On date 2003-11-06:

IEC 62271-200:2003 Withdrawn

The last version of this standard is:(On date 2011-10-24)

IEC 62271-200(COR1:2015) (stability date :2028)(page:178)(available languages :English/French, Spanish)(Edition 2.0)

This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition(2003):

In COR1 of this standard, we just see a change in the 6.2.2 subclause. (wet test)

1-definitions, classifications, and testing procedures are specified more precisely;
2- categories LSC2A and LSC2B have been clarified and LSC2 has been assigned a separate definition;
3- specific ratings related to fault level to earth (4.5 to 4.7) are introduced;
4- solid insulated high-voltage parts are no longer considered as compartments on their own;
5- an optional rating “cable test voltage” and the associated requirements and type tests are introduced;
6- for testing the internal arc classification, when assigned by the manufacturer, more specific guidance is provided regarding the test arrangement, room simulation, and arc initiation;
7- a single phase to earth ignition is also recognized for internal arc testing;
8- Annexes A and B are renumbered Annexes AA and BB.
