High voltage circuit breakers signals in substation automation

Circuit breakers are conformed of one or several sealed interrupting chambers in which a dielectric gas is contained (mainly SF6 gas), an insulating structure often based on porcelain insulators, a set of elements for providing the mechanical power needed to close and open the primary contacts quickly and a series of devices required for handle control commands and sense relevant parameters and conditions.
Due the demanding service to which the CB is dedicated, strict monitoring and signaling must be made to ensure that the equipment will respond in an appropriate manner when a switching operation is requested from protective relays or a bay controller. This brings about the need to manage in the SAS projects; a number of input signals referring to CB position indication and condition monitoring of various supporting media, as well as output signals consisting of opening/closing command orders, such as those shown in Table.
