GE Vernova and the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq advance significant initiatives

The most important joint projects between GE Vernova and the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq:

The initiative to modernize 46 GE Vernova gas turbines, which serve 12 power plants, is anticipated to contribute more than 500 megawatts (MW) to the national grid by the summer of 2025.

The Advanced Gas Path (AGP) enhancements from GE Vernova, implemented at the Al Mansouriya, Al-Quds, and Dhiqar power plants, have resulted in a 6 percent increase in their power generation capacity.

Additionally, GE Vernova has successfully executed extensive maintenance projects across several power plants, collectively generating 3.7 gigawatts, as part of its service and upgrade agreements.

Details of the cooperation between GE Verona and the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq:

Baghdad, Iraq — The Ministry of Electricity (MoE) and GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) have announced a significant advancement in Iraq’s electricity infrastructure with the successful completion of upgrades at multiple key power plants. These enhancements have notably improved the performance and output of existing GE Vernova generating units. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by the Ministry to modernize the power generation infrastructure, thereby increasing grid stability and capacity to meet the rising energy demands in Iraq, in line with the country’s energy transition objectives.

The comprehensive upgrade project involves 46 gas turbines across 12 power plants, aiming to add up to 500 megawatts (MW) to the national grid by the summer of 2025. This modernization is anticipated to enhance operational flexibility while increasing the output, efficiency, and availability of the power generation facilities. Among the power plants included in this initiative are Ninawa, Al Diwaniyah, Hilla, Karbala, Shat Al Basra, Najibiya, Samawa, Dhiqar, Al Khairat, and Al Haidariya, which have already transitioned from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to natural gas, resulting in an approximate capacity increase of 260 MW.

The remaining plants are expected to undergo modernization by the summer of 2025, with an anticipated additional capacity increase of around 250 MW.

Furthermore, GE Vernova has successfully implemented its Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades on several 9.E gas turbines at the Al-Quds and Dhiqar power plants, as well as MXLII upgrades on 13E2 gas turbines at the Al Mansouriya power plant. These upgrades are projected to yield output increases of up to 6% for each of these facilities, allowing Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity (MoE) to generate more electricity with the same fuel consumption.

Additionally, as part of a service and upgrade agreement established in 2024 with the MoE to improve the availability of power plants nationwide, GE Vernova has completed extensive maintenance projects across several of these facilities, which collectively have a total capacity of 3.7 gigawatts.
